Christmas Trees by Joseph Garland
D
We live in the North Country
G
A village by a creek
A
Steady work most of the year
D
At times it’s week to week
C
December comes, we load the truck
G
Head south on the Thruway
F
In the city before dawn
D
Settle just west of Broadway
D
We park ‘til Christmas Eve
G
With our sidewalk stall
A
Festooned in lights and heaters
D
Trees lined up, large to small
C
Wreaths and holly and garland
G
Some artificial snow
F
The same people come by each year
D
We see children as they grow
F A
In December we’re New Yorkers like all the rest
F A
Our neighborhood one block north and south, block east and one west
D A
If you want a Christmas tree it’s true what you’ve heard
G A
You can find a nice one over on west 83rd
D
It gets cold and wet
G
Folks give us hot things to eat
A
Some stop by just to chat
D
Gabbing as they stomp their feet
C
We are always open
G
24 hours a day
F
All the stores are welcoming
D
We’re never turned away
D
We don’t feel anonymous
G
It’s like our second home
A
The people happy to see us
D
We never feel alone
C
Except of course at 2 a.m.
G
When we’re cold inside the van
F
Then we know we’re just visiting
D
Will have to leave again
D
Just around noon time
G
On December 24th
A
It’s time to pack our things
D
And head back up north.
C
We love our town
G
The open space and the air
F
And we love the City
D
And the time that we spend there.
